6 misconceptions about tenant insurance
Car owners know they need car insurance, but a lot of renters don’t bother with tenant insurance. In fact, the Insurance Bureau of Canada reports that about half of all tenants don’t have insurance to cover contents and liability. Tenant insurance typically isn’t high on most people’s list of priorities — and, after all, you’re not legally required to have it. But that decision is often based on misconceptions, from underestimating how much it costs to replace your belongings to not understanding your legal liability as a tenant. Here are some of the most common misconceptions about tenant insurance — and how knowing the truth could…

Why insurers can’t afford to have Canadians drown in debt
Low interest rates in Canada are here to stay, primarily because of very high debt levels, David Chilton, keynote speaker at the 2019 Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) Conference, said in Toronto last Wednesday. “Low interest rates are here to stay,” said Chilton, a former Dragon on CBC’s Dragon’s Den and best-selling author of The Wealthy Barber, a guide to financial planning. “We may see them for years and years and years or more…. “Things are not going to go up dramatically. They are not going to normalize for a very long time, for a simple reason: There’s way too much…

What Aviva sees trending in the small business insurance market
The need for tailored offerings and coverage for multiple operations remains important in the small business insurance market, Aviva Canada told Canadian Underwriter Wednesday. There is an increasing demand for the right service, education and choice, said James Warburton, Aviva’s vice president of commercial insurance enablement, in an interview Wednesday. “Small commercial is big in Canada,” he said. “It’s not a trend so much as it’s a continuing trend. Chubb finds ‘alarming’ rise in ransomware attacks
Malware cyber attacks are on the rise compared to one year ago, according to Chubb, with a new type of strain on the rise. The first half of 2019 has seen more ransomware attacks than 2018, catching the eye of the insurer in its third-quarter edition of its Chubb Cyber InFocus Report, where it called the rise “alarming.” That follows an 84% increase in ransomware attacks from 2017-2018. While not a new threat, Michael Tanenbaum, head of Chubb cyber North America said that the attacks have evolved, with some demands reaching six- and seven-figures. Therefore, “it is critical for businesses to understand the…

The big question mark on supply chain liability risk
What liability risk do Canadian corporate clients face if they have supply chains in countries where workers are vulnerable to abuse or unsafe working conditions? It’s an open question right now, but brokers could get some guidance once the Supreme Court of Canada issues its decision in an appeal from Vancouver-based Nevsun Resources Ltd., lawyers suggest. Some Eritrean refugees in Canada want to sue Nevsun in British Columbia. Plaintiffs allege they were threatened with physical punishment and imprisonment if they did not work at a mine in Eritrea. The case is still before the courts. Plaintiffs are not alleging that Nevsun itself…

AAA research on useless escape tools raises concerns about virtually indestructible glass windows in vehicles
An increasing number of vehicles come with virtually indestructible glass windows designed to keep passengers from being thrown from their vehicles in the event of a crash or rollover. The glass, which is made of the same materials as windshields, also provides a quieter ride.
But new research from AAA highlights a potential downside, too: The growing use of laminated glass to encase most of the passenger compartment could also hinder a driver's escape if the vehicle catches fire or enters a body of water and begins to sink.
